In this project i wish to consider a bulk carrier of 20,000 dwt and I want to analyze the probability of making the ship’s propulsion electrical using hydrogen fuel cells. Also, the ship will be equipped with some vertical axis wind generators to produce the hydrolysis process on board for a sufficient amount of hydrogen consumption and reserves.

Considering the price of a barrel of oil, which is volatile, alternative and renewable fuels in general and even shipping becomes a very attractive option because the rate of discovery of new oil fields is less than the rate of consumption.

Another factor to consider is global warming. Therefore, to limit the risk of emissions or deviation is necessary to bring CO2 levels to an acceptable level. Ideally, using non-carbon fuels for combustion composition does not result in CO2. From this point of view the hydrogen fuel is shown that the combustion (oxidation) resulting water.

As an alternative to currently available to us alternative fuels such as biodiesel, bioethanol and hydrogen and renewable energy as wind generators, marine generators and photovoltaic cells of the second generation.

The best known is the use of hydrogen in fuel cell. As a working principle is based on a reverse phenomenon of electrolysis. Gas inserts two different spaces separated by an electrolyte. The interaction between the electrolyte and hydrogen results in its dissociation, the separation of the electron in hydrogen atom and attracting it to the anode. Remained positive hydrogen ions migrates through the electrolyte and combine with oxygen from the cathode to form water. Since this water has a deficit of one electron, it is retrieved from the cathode. As a result, between the cathode and anode a potential difference is established if the two electrodes connecting an electrical consumer, emf (electro-motive-force) created will generate an electrical current.

The operation is shown schematically in Figure 1 below.

Overall efficiency of conversion of a fuel cell power is higher than that of thermal engine systems. A comparison of overall yield power conversion is shown in Figure 2.

As regards wind generators exist in Romania SC FINEXSRL Brasov have two patents for the vertical axis.
