Tanzania safari

Tanzania's Northern Circuit is renowned for offering some of the finest wildlife viewing throughout Africa. Its natural abundance of wildlife, along with the annual migration of millions of animals across these northern reaches, make up a flourishing eco-system that is now benefiting from hard-fought conservation measures.

Most safaris and many mountain-climbing expeditions in Northern Tanzania begin and end in Arusha. Tour operators generally assemble all equipment here before departure, and many people spend at least one night in the richly foliaged and fertile hillsides around the town or in Arusha itself before taking to the road.

A safari in the north of Tanzania is quite unlike a "fly-in" safari in the south, because it is easier to drive the distances between locations. A standard mobile driving safari will include all the parks above in a circuit, starting and ending in Arusha (It is also possible to fly between some of the parks).

Tanzania Odyssey specialise in arranging personalised Land Rover safaris, in which you experience the joys of this area in the comfort of a private vehicle, with your own highly experienced driver-guide.

The exception to this rule is a Conservation Corporation flying circuit, visiting their luxury lodges in this northern region; (Klein's, Grumeti, Maji Moto, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge). The minimum recommended time for this is 5 nights, although 6 to 8 are strongly recommended, spending the majority of time spent in the Serengeti.

With few exceptions, no walking is allowed in the northern parks and game viewing is by closed-sided vehicle. The northern parks are more visited than the parks in the south, although the Serengeti is large enough to cope with the number of visitors without feeling overcrowded.

Quality and Choice. The major differences in price occur not due to the choice of accommodation (surprisingly luxury tented camping is about the same price as the luxury Serena hotels), but due to the high standard of service provided. There are 3 major chains of hotels represented in the northern parks, the best are the Conservation Corporation lodges, then the Serena hotels and then the Sopa lodges, which are good but much older and lacking the style and panache of the other two.

For a Northern circuit safari the differences of the safari experience are directly related to the cost. A private Land Rover safari staying in the Serena lodges will cost slightly more than a group minibus itinerary, however it will be infinitely preferable.
