HISTORY:

Microsoft started its Indian operations in the year 1990 setting up Microsoft India Corporation (Pvt) Ltd in New Delhi.

The India Development Centre in Hyderabad was launched in 1998. This was the second largest development center outside the US facility, which is situated in Redmond. It grew from 20 in 1998 to more than 1.500 by the end of 2008.

In the year 2000, Bill Gates visited India and announced an alliance with Infosys.

A year later, Gates returned to India, this time with plans to invest $100 million at the Hyderabad center and double the employee headcount to 500 by 2005.

Microsoft currently has offices in 13 cities: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune.

Since its entry into India, Microsoft has focused on three things, namely:

Becoming a key IT partner to the Indian government and the industry;

Supporting and fueling the growth of the local IT industry through its partner enablement programs;

Under Microsoft Unlimited Potential, enhancing education, jobs and opportunities and fostering innovation through relevant, affordable access to computing.

Microsoft expanded its footprint in India by bringing all its six units of business into the country:

Microsoft Research India (MSR India): established in 12 January 2005 in Bangalore. MSR India focuses on developing technology for emerging markets, multilingual systems, sensor networks and Geographical Information Systems.

Microsoft India Development Center (MSIDC): launched in January 1998 in Hyderabad.

Microsoft IT in Hyderabad: Is a seamless extension of the Microsoft IT teams in Redmond. It is also Microsoft IT’s largest operations outside of Redmond.

Microsoft Global Services India (MGSI) in Hyderabad: The centre is involved in the architecture and design of large, complex and challenging engagements or solutions based on cutting-edge Microsoft technologies.

Microsoft India Corporation (Pvt) Ltd: Today MCI has offices in 13 cities and looks at the sales and marketing for enterprise, small and mid-market group and consumer segments.

Microsoft India Global Technical Support Centre (IGTSC), Bangalore: established in January 2003. Microsoft India GTSC provides technical resolution service to Microsoft’s English-speaking Enterprise customers and partners across geographies.

All of the business units together represent the complete Microsoft product lifecycle.
